After 3 years of photographing life on the border, I stood in front of the looming steel wall dividing the city of Nogales. This time I had a new feeling come over me. The invasion of the many government entities patrolling over our land and in the air, scarring our earth with new roads, walls and towers, have transformed the border area from a beautiful rural scene into a war zone. Looking at the faded and broken crosses barely clinging to the wall, I walked closer to read the names of those who lost their lives crossing the border while trying to imagine the heartbreak of the families who had hand-written the names on the crosses. As I began to read their names they became more personal and not just numbers any more, but real people who had been put in a difficult position, suffered and died. I am using my art and my craftsmanship to give these deaths meaning beyond a tattered cross. I decided to hand inscribe these names on sterling silver crosses to be worn as pendants to give these brave people an honorable memorial and chance to bring awareness to others so their passing will always be something more than a government number.
